Tell us about yourself!
I am a junior major in Math and Econ with a minor in business. In my free time, I like baking, making and tasting teas. Every time when I bake I enjoy the feeling when you can carefully prepare something and share the joy with people that you love. I was born in a city that is famous for its tea trees. Growing up I had the chance to explore different tea culture and that really fascinates me.
What is your favorite TED talk and why?
The reason why I chose this video is that the older we get the more we have to consciously try to protect and maintain what are truly important to us. This video taught me how to be grateful and make every day a pleasant day. For most of the time in my life I have not opened my eyes to the people who are around me, to the beauty of nature and to everyday life. I buried myself in the mundane life and forget to think about to be grateful of what I have already had. I remember how disappointed I was when I did not get a satisfied grade. I remember how desperate I feel when I did not get an internship that I have always wanted. I remember how fearful I was when I hear my mother’s illness. However, after watching this video, I realized I am lucky. I have lived in a civilized world. Just by a simple flip I will get electric light and by turn on the facet I will have cold or hot water. I was born in a family that can support me to study abroad. I am healthy. I have all these enormous gifts that are given to me for free. Learning to be grateful let me open my heart. I am no longer agonized about my life. I will smile to strangers, stop for a butterfly landing on a concrete, and listen to the creepers climbing outside APM building. Gratefulness has changed me and I hope this spirit can bless everyone.
What enticed you to choose your major(s) and/or minor(s)?
The reason why I choose my Math and Economics major is because it is a strong blend of qualitative and quantitative analysis, and serves as a strong base to help me develop a career in IB. I have taken advanced mathematics courses that have taught me how to think analytically and the qualitative economic courses have taught me to look at the world from a broader perspective.
What is your interpretation of this years TEDxUCSD theme, Madness and Miracles?
It’s always difficult to define what is madness and what is miracles. A great miracle at a wrong time and wrong place will be madness but a madness at the right time and right place will be a miracle. Everything is possible if we have faith and timing.
Who/What inspires you?
What inspires me is that I want to be a better me every day. Thanks to technology, the world is changing so fast. Every day when I get up I felt I need to learn something new and if I don’t I will get behind easily. Therefore, in my M&A internship, I always tried to learn as much as I can. One area I focused on is the renewable space. I started knowing nothing about LFG and solar power to the end of the internship I sourced 20 potential deals with an aggregate value of 700 million. I actively reach out to professionals in the firm asking for advice and then I take into action by myself. When I left the firm, the company has already signed a contract with one of the biggest renewable energy provider in the US
If you could have a super power what would it be and why?
I want to have the power to control time. If I could have more than 24 hours per day. I could do much more than I can do now and thus learn more and grow faster.
What's one thing you can't live without?
One thing I can’t live without is learning. I enjoy learning either from books or from other people. I believe only through consistent learning one person can truly understand what he/she wants and what he/she really is.
What is one life goal that you have?
I want to travel to more than 100 countries. I have already traveled to 22 countries. This has helped me broaden my horizon.
