Tell us about yourself!
I was born in the Bay Area and grew up in Beijing for 10 years. I like playing volleyball, running and playing piano and reading. I love listening to Kali Uchis and Indie music. My childhood dream was to work for the CIA or FBI and catch all the bad guys. I really enjoy learning about psychology and astronomy.
What is your favorite TED talk and why?
My favorite TED talk is The Power of Vulnerability by Brene Brown. Every time I feel like blocking others out and staying in my own shell, I would watch this talk and it’ll remind me of how important it is to let myself be vulnerable. Overall, The Power of Vulnerability is a very insightful talk that really helped me better understand myself and my actions.
What enticed you to choose your major(s) and/or minor(s)?
My current major is management science, but I’m in the process of switching into Aerospace Engineering. I’ve always been super interested in astronomy and space exploration, so I want to be able to design machines that can carry us to other stars and planets. I have always strongly believed in the existence of extraterrestrial life, it’d be amazing if I can meet another form of life before I die.
What is your interpretation of this years TEDxUCSD theme, Madness and Miracles?
To me, the theme Madness and Miracles means that there is no norm. What seems normal is always changing and subjective. It means to never be scared to be crazy. It means weird is the new sexy.
Who/What inspires you?
A lot of people and things inspire me. When I see someone who’s super passionate about something, it inspires me to find my own passion. When I see a dog really happy once its owner comes home, it inspires me to find the purest form of love and loyalty. When I’m about to give up during a half marathon race and I see everyone around me still running, it inspires me to keep pushing.
If you could have a super power what would it be and why?
I want to be able to teleport so I can eat all kinds of food whenever I want. I’d be able to wake up at 7:55 for an 8AM class. I will be able to travel the world without worrying about hotel expenses because I can just teleport back home after I travel everyday.
What's one thing you can't live without?
One thing I cannot live without is music. Music is one of the most universal forms of expression. People of all cultures and backgrounds often unite together because of music. I find so much joy in creating and listening to music.
What is one life goal that you have?
I truly believe that my goal/purpose in life is to help improve other people’s lives. I think there’s always that one moment in everyone’s life when they realize how lucky and fortunate they are. People always tell me that we get what we deserve, but on that day I realized I haven’t done anything to deserve to be so fortunate. I have so many things in life that were just given to me for free, and my goal is to spent the rest of my life paying for it by helping those that are less fortunate.
Choose a song to describe you and explain why you chose this song.
I don’t think there’s one song that can describe me. However, Cool Down by Kolohe Kai will always be one of my favorite. This song is super simple and just talks about a day at the beach. I really love the melody of this song and it reminds me to never take anything too seriously, especially myself. It reminds me to just enjoy what I have and be grateful.
